March Garden Preparation - Spring is just around the corner
Wow, what a winter! Finally, spring is waking up the garden and London feels like it’s responding to a smattering of sun and blue skies. With spring equinox on 20th March, and the clocks “springing” forward on the 29th, longer, lighter days are ready to bloom.
Nature is already celebrating. Magnolia stellata is bursting with white starry flowers, Euphorbia characias are glowing bright green, perennials are pushing fresh shoots and Narcissus are fully flowering. In woodland areas, you might spot large Leucojum dotted about, stretching out the snowdrop 'look'.
Q&S Head Gardener Tiziana gives us a run-down of what’s on her to-do list for March.
Tiz’s Garden Notes - March 🌱
- Lawns can have their first cut if the grass is growing and the ground isn't too wet.
- Mulch beds and borders to feed the soil, suppress weeds, and retain moisture.
- Keep an eye out for late frosts, especially when planting seedlings or pruning shrubs - like hydrangeas - where old flowers protect new buds.
- Cut back Epimediums to reveal their delicate flowers.
- Tidy up last year’s perennial seed heads and add them to the compost – a lovely carbon rich material.

As the garden shifts from winter to spring, these small seasonal jobs help set the tone for the months ahead.
