Pushing the Dial: Introducing Q&S’s New Sustainability Lead
We’re very excited to share that Tiziana Lia has taken on a new role at Q&S as Sustainability Lead.
If you know Q&S, you’ll know that doing no harm to environment, community or wildlife, doing only good” has been quietly baked into every aspect of the business since we began on Jan 1st 2000. From decision making to every process and action. No fanfare, just the right thing to do.
Moving forward with data
If we’re to continue pushing the dial in horticulture, we need to forge forward with data. To be accountable for our actions, we must keep enhancing our systems to consistently quantify what we’re doing. Hence the new job title. And we’re thrilled to say that Tiziana brings an exceptional foundation to this position. In her previous role as Head Gardener/Contract Manager, her deep horticulture knowledge and years of hands-on client experience make her perfectly placed to take what we’ve always done and push it further.
When asked how she felt stepping into the role, Tiziana said, “It’s a natural progression of the work I care deeply about – looking after landscapes in a way that supports nature, people, and the long-term health of our environments.”
Measuring matters
Q&S has always been quietly humble about what we’re doing, already capturing Scopes 1 & 2 and actively working towards Scope 3, looking carefully at all aspects of the business.
Tiziana’s focus now is on expanding the data and reporting framework for Q&S and our clients, adding: “Reporting isn’t just about being accountable. It’s about transparency and having hard facts that give us the opportunity to keep pushing ourselves. Genuinely improving all the time, innovating and continuing to lead.”
To do that, we need to know where we’re starting from. Putting clear processes in place to measure what we’re doing, explaining how we’re doing it, and tracking change over time, so we can show, in real terms the difference our approach is making.
Q&S’s Director Sue Payne added: “Sustainability isn’t something we bolt on, it’s who we are. Tiziana’s role means we can go further with the data we capture and use it to add even more value for every client we work with. It’s very exciting seeing how transformative thoughtful horticulture is.”
The value we bring to clients
We demonstrate our continued commitment to social and environmental value every day, from how we carry out our tender process, how we manage spaces from the very beginning of a client contract, to planning works, and ongoing on-the-ground maintenance for each client. Being data-rich enables us to help our clients achieve their own ESG targets.
Way beyond everyday landscape design and maintenance, we are working on developing bespoke algorithms to show social and environmental value. Tracking biodiversity net gain year on year, showing how green spaces aid mental health, draw the community together, complement legislation and feed into the bigger picture. Helping to green the country.
Future proofing organically
Ultimately, we build and maintain landscapes organically, so that they are not only more resilient and more biodiverse, but future-proofed for the next generation. No chemicals and no synthetic fertilisers. Instead using organic fertilisers to nourish soil, and biological controls to combat pests and maintain a healthy eco system. Using nothing that’s a danger to the planet, the environment or communities.
Tiziana sums it up nicely: “I’m incredibly proud to be in this position, to put to paper what we’re achieving on the ground. It’s not just about landscapes it’s about quantifying them. Green spaces can genuinely change things and data gives us the ability to track how on-the-ground-work benefits nature, people and communities. So, let’s give gardeners and green spaces the credit they deserve.”
